Mandi joined our team in mid 2008 as an administrator. Before joining HBL she received her diplomas as a Legal Assistant and Administrative Assistant as well as her book keeping. Mandi assists both the Nanaimo and Vancouver offices in completing workshops as well as making travel arrangements for the staff. Mandi’s main duties at the Nanaimo office are: reception, processing expenses and incoming supplier invoices, accounts receivable and assisting Linda with invoicing. In her spare time Mandi enjoys gardening with her Chihuahua and playing Guitar Hero with friends.

Keltie is a planning analyst with experience in environmental education, active transportation, health and planning. She is a recent graduate of UBC’s Community and Regional Planning program. Keltie’s work includes case study research, urban design and graphic support, youth engagement, facilitation and strategic planning.

She is a board member of the Environmental Youth Alliance, involved in the Canadian Community of Practice in EcoHealth, and a member of the B:C:Clettes, a bicycle-inspired performance collective in Vancouver.

Kelsey’s experience comes from the fields of biology and restoration ecology. She has worked for both academic and public sectors in restoration-based research and invasive species management. Her experiences, which include volunteer participation in community restoration initiatives, led her to pursue a Masters degree in Landscape Architecture with the goal of designing opportunities for people to engage with nature in the urban realm.

Her definition of nature includes the processes of growing and recycling food. Working with HB Lanarc, she has gained experience on a diverse range of projects, including water conservation, parks and trails planning, and site-scale design.

Emory is a recent planning graduate with a passion for affordable housing, First Nations community planning, equity in planning, and community engagement. Her research includes: national and international affordable housing policy and best practices, the use of web 2.0 tools in civic engagement, poverty and homelessness in the GTA, and the role of community planning in the BC Treaty Process. Emory has experience working with Toronto and Ontario planning legislation, and has an extensive knowledge of planning issues in the GTAH. She is currently learning the Mi’kmaq language and is working on a treatment for a documentary on the graphic design of the TTC.

Janine has unique and extensive experience in the areas of sustainable food systems and urban agriculture. She is a member of the Vancouver Food Policy Council and National Planning for Food and Agriculture Network. In her role as Food Systems Planner at HB Lanarc, Janine works with communities, municipalities, and developers to create sustainable food system strategies, planning and design opportunities, and food policy to support sustainable food systems. Janine was recognized as Young Planner of the year in 2010 by the Canadian Institute of Planners.

Janine recently worked with one of America’s leading architecture and design firms to develop an innovative, agriculture-focused development concept for a high-profile site in the Vancouver area. She also completed an urban agriculture strategy for a new neighbourhood that will be the site of the 2010 Olympics Athletes’ Village and a community garden toolkit for local governments in BC. Currently, Janine is developing a BC farm to school guide that will connect local food and farmers to schools in BC.

Kate is motivated by solutions that combine design, ecology, social context and effective communication. She holds a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Guelph and has experience within non-profit conservation work in Saskatchewan as well as private sector consulting in Ontario. Internationally, Kate has lived and studied in Sweden & Chile which have enriched her design perspective and processes. Currently, Kate is engaged in the exploration of food systems planning and restoration ecology practices in the context of Vancouver Island.

Kate is passionate about her community and contributing to its daily quality of life. When not in the office, you can find Kate cycling around town or exploring the seasonal bounties of the forests and mountains of Vancouver Island.

Jennifer brings experience with complex policy projects at the local government level to her planning work at HBL, where she creates policies and sustainability strategies for both public and private sector clients. She has developed standards and incentives for affordable and energy efficient housing, negotiated for public amenities, and crafted neighbourhood plans that further sustainability objectives.

Jennifer is passionate about food systems, and has integrated them into her work in non-profits, government, and now HBL. Her post-graduate planning studies took place at the University of British Columbia, where she conducted ecological footprint analyses and researched the planning implications of peak oil, a topic on which she has since educated.

Daryl has several years of technical knowledge and experience working with Geographic Information Systems and 3D landscape modeling tools. He holds a BA in Geography from UBC as well as an Advanced Diploma in Geographic Information from BCIT. He has worked as a cartographer and data manager in the areas of natural resource management and urban planning and is interested in exploring the role of data visualization and it's ability to effectively communicate spatial information. Micah joined HBL in 2009, bringing leadership experience in developing community-wide and organizational inventories of energy use and greenhouse gases. Prior to joining HBL, Micah was a Senior Program Officer for ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, where he led the development of the Climate and Air Pollution Planning Assistant (CAPPA), a decision support tool for developing climate action plans.

Micah is a subject matter expert in greenhouse gas inventory methods and community climate change mitigation strategies. When he is not at work, Micah can often be found running and hiking in hills near and far from Vancouver.

Sebastian holds a Masters in Planning from UBC’s School of Regional and Community Planning. His planning experience is grounded in a broad range of practice, from development planning with Vancouver firm Brook + Associates, to social planning to climate action research and writing.

Sebastian has worked on the City of Vancouver Mayor’s Working Group on Immigration, as well as the Climate Action Toolkit website for the BC Government and the Union of British Columbia Municipalities. He has a particular interest in the interface between sustainability and the approvals process.

Jason Locke is an experienced community planner with a passion for First Nations planning, community engagement, sustainable development, and affordable housing. His experience includes historical research, Aboriginal land claims, community development work, land use planning, Aboriginal housing policy and community planning.

A key focus of his planning work has been building planning capacity in Indigenous communities and incorporating Indigenous Knowledge into community-based planning practices. Odete has 12 years experience in community planning and managing development applications for municipalities, regional districts and private sector clients. Odete has prepared revenue bylaws for municipalities, including subdivision, and development cost charge bylaws. Odete currently manages community plan and zoning amendment applications for HBL's development clients.

Odete holds a degree in Environmental Studies and a Masters of Science with a focus on land use planning and sustainability. Odete’s strength is in working with municipalities, citizens and the development community to forge strong working relationships to advance sustainability.

Kate graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Masters in Landscape Architecture and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours - Visual Arts Degree from the University of Victoria. Since joining HB Lanarc in March 2008, she has been involved in the design and development of graphic communication materials for public engagement and facilitation projects.

Kate offers experience in the design, planning and research of child centred outdoor play environments. Her research working at the University of British Columbia focused on the design of outdoor playspaces at childcare centres in Vancouver, and aimed to understand the physical and environmental factors that support the positive development of children.

Trained and educated to think like a business person at the Richard Ivey School of Business, Maxwell focuses on sustainability under the mentorship of the Planning Institute of BC’s 2010 Planner of the Year, Mark Holland.

Maxwell has been involved in groundbreaking projects aimed at climate protection at the municipal and provincial levels, innovative community food strategy and other projects utilizing a foundation of collaborative engagement. He is now taking on the role of Business Manager to oversee the development and implementation of corporate strategy, marketing and communications, innovation and other areas.

Maxwell is an Advanced Open Water Diver and uses traveling, films and the outdoors to provide the work-life balance he strives to build into the organizations he works with. Maxwell has returned to HB Lanarc after a year traveling China, living in a monastery in Nepal, scuba diving throughout SE Asia, and living in a van in Australia in 2009/10.

Prior to working at HB Lanarc, Frances was a project coordinator at Social Planning and Research Council of BC; a social researcher for Haringey Council in the UK; and a community development worker in Botswana. Frances has a degree in International Development from the University of British Columbia.

Andrea believes that sustainability begins with inspiration, education and collaboration, and she brings an awareness of team dynamics and effective communication to all of her projects. Since joining the firm in 2005, she has gained extensive experience in sustainable community development strategies, for both developers and municipalities.

Andrea holds a degree in Environmental Design, a program combining planning, architecture, and landscape architecture. Her exploration of sustainability began in 1996 when she began studying ecological design and natural building methods (timber, strawbale, & cob) in rural sustainable communities.

Sarah is an Environmental Planner with ten years of experience. She has worked on a variety of planning projects, including solid waste management, community engagement, and community development. Sarah has particular expertise in waste management planning and strategic planning. Her work has included facilitating the development of solid waste management plans, reviewing and evaluating emerging waste management technologies, conducting feasibility studies for composting programs and facilities, full cost accounting of waste management systems, and developing and running community engagement programs. In addition to technical abilities, Sarah is skilled in project management, facilitation, and conflict management.
