Alex is dedicated to building an economy that supports healthy communities while protecting the natural systems upon which all life depends. Before joining HB Lanarc, he was the David Suzuki Foundation's Senior Climate and Energy Analyst. He has advised all levels of government, businesses and NGOs on advancing sustainability with an emphasis on climate change, energy and resource efficiency. He has worked with climate champions across North America, and led award winning community energy and climate plans. He received an Action Canada Fellowship for policy excellence and earned his MSc at University of Oxford where he was a British Council Scholar. Alex operates from the premise that our greatest challenges are institutional not technological. He hails from Chilliwack, BC. When not working to protect the climate, he is out enjoying it in the rainforested Coast Range. |
Bud Fraser |

Bud has eighteen years of combined engineering, project management and research experience in Canada, Europe and Asia. With a background originally in Electrical Engineering, Bud engineered communications systems for MDI/Motorola in many locations worldwide from 1988 to 1994, including some of the first wireless data networks in the world. Since 1997 Bud has focused his work on environmental and sustainability projects, developing and implementing innovative waste management technology, and integrating technical aspects such as biological processes together with information technology. His role at HB Lanarc focuses on strategic and integrated technical approaches to buildings, infrastructure systems and resources including water, wastewater, solid waste and energy, with a strong project management component. Most recently Bud has been involved in the development of green building, energy and infrastructure workshops and strategies for developers and municipalities. |
Bruce Irvine |

Bruce Irvine is an accredited planner with a background as a senior Public Sector Manager and Economic Development professional. Bruce has a track record of delivering business plans designed to reduce real costs while increasing service timelines and sustainability practices. He is known for implementing cost recovery programs, process streamlining, and alternative design standards. A graduate of the London School of Economics, Bruce has led award winning private and public sector projects related to affordable housing and brownfield urban re-development including leadership of Calgary’s Bridges, and Garrison Woods/Currie Barracks developments. Bruce's work related to innovation in planning has been recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators. He served as a member of Calgary's Affordable Housing Team, and active member of the Alberta Association of the Canadian Association of Planners, and on the Advisory Board for the Calgary Municipal Advisory Association. |
Peter Russell |

Peter is an experienced planner with a passion for urban sustainability, public engagement, community planning, urban design, and placemaking. To ensure the best possible outcomes in his work, Peter focuses on building strong relationships with his clients, the public, citizen advisory committees, and stakeholders. His extensive use of policy and design charrettes and creative dialogue-based workshops also ensures meaningful visions are created and strong relationships are developed between council, the public and stakeholders. Since 2003, Peter has managed and/or facilitated eight charrette workshops with cities across Western Canada both large and small. Peter also works with cities and developers as a sustainability advisor and on matters related to community planning and development approvals. Peter holds professional degrees in Environmental Engineering (University of Windsor, 1998) and Community and Regional Planning (UBC, 2004) with emphasis on urban design and urban sustainability. As an Environmental Engineer, Peter worked with Siemens Automotive Systems to implement environmental management systems (ISO 14000). Peter also worked with the DaimlerChrysler Corp as a development engineer. His unique perspective on industrial facilities, operations and engineering development processes has been valuable to business and municipal clients.

Peter is a community planner with a focus in sustainable urban development. He holds degrees in Chemistry and Community and Regional Planning and a post-graduate diploma in Environmental Science. Peter’s strengths lie in his analytical skills and strategic approach to implementation. His professional work has ranged widely, including: urban sustainability, land-use regulation, public participation, environmental management, and community design. Peter is a member of the Board of the Dynamic Cities Project, and Chair of the Board of the False Creek Watershed Society. |
Jana Zelenski |

Jana brings a strong background in landscape architecture and planning to HBL and a belief that the best design solutions are reached through comprehensive planning and process. She is responsible for planning and design development, communications, community process and site implementation. Jana has collaborated with municipalities on a variety of scales and has had multiple opportunities to work through community and client consultation processes. Jana’s recent projects have included work at both the community and site scales, development of client and community relationships and supervision of design construction and completion. With degrees from the University of Guelph and Penn State and overseas exchanges, Jana’s education in landscape architecture has allowed her to develop a broad range of skills including technical, graphic and research abilities that she combines to produce effective solutions to complex problems.
